How to use and store
Dried Mushrooms

Dried mushrooms are a fantastic pantry staple. They offer the rich, savory flavors of fresh mushrooms but with a nearly unlimited shelf life. If you’ve only ever used fresh mushrooms, dried mushrooms are a great way to keep that flavor on hand whenever you need it.

Substituting Dried Mushrooms for Fresh

When a recipe calls for fresh mushrooms, use about three ounces of dried mushrooms to replace a pound of fresh. After rehydration, the mushrooms will return to their original size and weight, providing the same amount the recipe calls for.

Rehydrating Mushrooms

Rehydrating mushrooms is simple. Cover the dried mushrooms with room-temperature water and let them soak for at least 30 minutes. Once they’re fully softened, rinse them under cool water to remove any grit. Don’t toss the soaking liquid! Strain it through a paper towel or coffee filter, and use it to add extra mushroom flavor to your dish or save it for soups and risottos.

Speed up the Process

If you’re in a hurry, you can use warm or hot water to rehydrate the mushrooms faster. Just keep in mind that some of the mushroom's flavor will transfer into the broth, so you may want to use that flavorful liquid in your recipe.

Storage tips!

Dried mushrooms are best stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Once rehydrated, they can be stored in the fridge for two to three days or frozen for later use. The leftover mushroom broth will keep in the fridge for up to three days or in the freezer for up to three months.
